GENERAL SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS




Adson’s Plain Forceps
Used for grasping delicate tissues where a tooth is not wanted.


Adson’s forceps with Teeth
Small tissue forceps used for grasping.  It is the forceps that is always used while suturing skin.  It is also used for very fine tissues where a tooth is necessary.

DeBakey Forceps
The most commonly used forceps of general surgeons.  It is used for grasping fragile to moderately dense tissue in deep incisions (appendectomy, breast, hernia, and bowel cases).  When a general surgeon asks for forceps, this is the one he is most likely to want.


Plain Dressing Forceps
Grasping forceps that are used mainly for packing material into narrow openings.  They have no teeth and a substantial tip.


Mayo Scissors-Curved
Used for cutting dense tissues such as young breast, uterine, and periosteal tissues.

Mayo Scissors-Straight
Used primarily for cutting suture.  Never use curved scissors to cut suture or anything other than human tissue.  Reserving curved scissors for only cutting tissue keeps them sharp, which is essential for the success of the procedure.

#3(No.3) Knife Handle
This is the most common knife handle used and it is needed on almost all cases for cutting skin and tissue.  It holds #10, #11, #12, and #15 knife blades.  The blades are disposable and are part of all counts.  They must be disposed of in the sharps container.  The handle is not disposable.

# 4(No.4) Knife Handle
The #20 blade is the only blade that may be used with this handle.  It is used for cutting very large incisions.  It is used infrequently.

Kochers forceps
A Kocher is used to grasp heavy tissue.   May also be used as a clamp.  The jaws may be straight or curved.  Other names: Ochsner.

Backhaus towel clip
A Backhaus towel clip is used to hold towels and drapes in place.  Other name: towel clip.

Allis forceps
An Allis is used to grasp tissue.  Available in short and long sizes.  A Judd-Allis holds intestinal tissue; a heavy allis holds breast tissue.
Beckman- Weitlaner Retractor
To retract or hold back tissue or bone for surgical exposure. Used in general surgery, orthopedic surgery, spinal surgery etc. They may be set in a fixed position with adjustable lock handles

Volkman finger Retractor
To retract or hold back tissues, muscle, organ or bone for surgical exposure. Used mainly in general and orthopedic surgeries. Two types are there-
  • Smaller type- used to hold back skin and tissue
  • Larger type- used to hold back muscles, bone or organs

Mayo-Hegar needle holder

It is used to hold and guide suture needle securely for suturing. They are available in many styles and sizes
